Absolut Vodka just published this ad today:

Absolut Vodka La Raza Ad

So Absolut is willing to give half the US to Mexico?  Apologists argue that this is just a reprint of the 1848 map of Mexico, invoking nostalgia for a good vodka.  But they haven’t looked closely at the 1848 map of Mexico; because the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo didn’t annex half of Oregon:

1848 Mexico Map - Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

I’m not sure if this was sloppiness, historical ignorance, cultural insensitivity, or an overt endoresement of the maps of La Raza.  Because this map is the national map of huge groups of Mexican nationals in and out of the US, many of whom are considered terrorist organizations by the FBI, who believe that their God-given destiny is to one day take back the US by force.  As someone who studies hispanic cultures for a living, allow me to school you that in every survey of immigrants, part of the reason illegal immigration is such an issue is that most immigrants have been taught at some point that the US actually belongs to them anyway.  Confere the ubiquitous youtube video of the Mexican head of state just in March speaking in San Diego, saying to a group of protestors, “This land has been, and someday will be again, Mexico.”  It is absolutely no different than if Absolut were to run a map in Mississippi of the US divided by the Mason Dixon line.  Or maybe run a map in Germany of the Third Reich’s boundaries.  It is the standard illiteracy of the literati to think this is somehow benign, somehow not the inner inklings of a muted call to violence.  American’s won’t see it because Americans don’t know the signals.  But it’s there.
